Our school is named in honor of Consuelo Herrera Mendez, Austin's first Latina teacher hired.
Mrs Mendez was herself an Austin ISD success story, graduating from Austin High in 1923 before spending 45 years teaching in our school district until her retirement in 1972.
She began her career at Comal School, before moving on - not only to teach at both Zavala and Brooke Elementary Schools in East Austin - but also as a committed advocate for parental involvement and engagement at both schools.
Mrs Mendez's passion for, and commitment to, education led her to mentor and develop many young teachers over her career. She was also involved in civic and public service issues, organizing the Ladies League of Latin American Citizens #202, serving as its President in 1962 and working with her husband to increase Hispanic participation in the democratic process.
Students and faculty at Consuelo Mendez Middle School are constantly inspired by the life and work of Consuelo Herrera Mendez, and we are proud to bear her name.
