Hello Maverick Families!

We are excited to get the new school year started! I know this has been a challenging time for all of us. As we welcome all Mavericks back on August 17, 2021 for in person learning , we understand that it will be exciting for some but difficult for others. Know that all our staff members are ready to welcome everyone back with safe and healthy procedures in place.

Safety Protocols:

At Mendez, we will continue to utilize hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and masks. Students will continue to use desk shields in all classrooms during in person learning and in the cafeteria. While we will no longer ask for students to go through a health check screening and temperature check upon entry, know the each student can continue to utilize the AISD health check app to screen themselves at home before arriving to school. If a student or staff member is exhibiting symptoms, we ask that they please stay home.

Changing from Last Year:

Buses will run normally with all staff and students wearing masks.

Assigned student seating will be provided in both classrooms and the cafeteria (for contract tracing purposes).

Parents/guardians are welcome to visit the campus for ARDS, 504’s, teacher conferences and registration but will not be allowed to visit classrooms, walk their children into the building, nor have lunch with their children. No other visitors will be allowed in the building without prior permission.

Student/Family Support:

Mendez will continue to provide Social Emotional Learning and Restorative Practices for our students. Our amazing counseling staff, CIS social workers, SEL Coordinator, teachers and administrators will be available to help meet student needs. If your child is in need of support, please reach out to your child’s teacher, counselor or administrator for assistance. Our Parent Support Specialist – Jessica Victoria jessica.victoria@austinisd.org is also available to help provide family and student support if needed.

NO CELL PHONES:

As a reminder, while we understand cell phones are a safety necessity for students before and after school, cell phone use during school hours will be prohibited. Students must power off their cell phone devices and keep them in their backpacks/bags at all times during the school day. Cell phones will be taken and kept by administrators if students use them during the school day. Students or parents may retrieve them afterschool.

Although we are still in the midst of the pandemic, know that Mendez MS is doing everything they can to help provide a safe and healthy learning environment. Our staff has been preparing for our students’ return and we can’t wait to get the 2021-2022 school year started! WE HAVE MISSED YOU ALL! We will continue to communicate with you to keep you informed and updated. Unity is strength…when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved ~Mattie Stepanek #Unity!

Please join our Facebook and Twitter page to keep informed.

Sincerely,

Director
